Jump to navigation. Rafi's first-hand narrative was expected to be revelatory in many ways. But the book disappoints, failing to shed any new light either on Bhutto's security in Rawalpindi jail or about his state of mind during those last tense days. True, Rafi gives a very detailed account of the security arrangements, of Bhutto's visitors, and how many times his wife Nusrat or daughter Benazir met him.

Dec 05, Omama. This book broke my heart. Already, the story of Bhutto dynasty, the one filled with tragedy, has always gripped me, and left me wondering about the inescapable aspects of being in power.
It's a political nostalgia. Many in Pakistan believe that the victimization of the Bhutto family and our supporters This book broke my heart. Many in Pakistan believe that the victimization of the Bhutto family and our supporters was the Karbala of our generation.
It was indeed a tragedy; for a man, who was charismatic leader and a very intelligent person; who brought power to the people, a vain autocrat who gave his nation confidence; yet he was a complex and contradictory figure. In this book, Colonel Rafiuddin, who witnessed Bhutto's last days in Jail, penned down Bhutto's state of mind during that time. After imposing martial law, if Zia-ul-Haq would have failed to eliminate Bhutto, his own life would become threatened.
As per 's constitution, abrogation of constitution was a serious crime punishable by death. So as a military dictator, he decided to hang Bhutto in the most ruthless and deliberately humiliating way in order to ensure his own survival.
Colonel Rafi gives a detailed account of Bhutto's visitors, his daily routine, his favorite foods and habits in jail. The author is silent at various places when it comes to the detailed insights into that murder case; but it's still one moving and poignant account; as it deals with the feelings and persona of Bhutto during his last days. Zia having hanged Bhutto who was arguably the most loved political leader in the history of Pakistan, his assassination was one of the most shocking political assassinations of Pakistan.
The book also benefits greatly to the readers interested to learn about the consequences and repercussion of Martial Law that restricts the Civil Rights and liberties, suppression of political dissent, no real elections, social immobility, and the unjustified imprisonment and killings of Political workers and the leaders like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto whose audacious and outrageous assassination still haunt the country. Former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was the most high profile political prisoner in Pakistan's history, condemned to die by hanging. This is a very readable account of his last days in jail, penned by the man charged with his security.
He recalls candid conversations with Bhutto, his views on a range of subjects and his sheer frustration with being a prisoner. The account of the condemned man's last moments is particularly detailed, graphic and poignant.
