Core placement for the core based tree multicast routing architecture Abstract: A number of emerging services such as teleconferencing, video on demand, distance education, etc. To make efficient use of network resources, it is desirable that the network supports multicasting. The core based tree CBT multicast routing architecture is a multicast routing protocol for the Internet. The CBT establishes a single shared tree for a multicast connection.

The shared tree is rooted at a center node called core. The location of the core may affect the cost and performance of the CBT. In this paper, the problem of core placement for the CBT is studied.

A method for placement of the core is proposed and compared with two simple methods. Extensive simulations are performed to compared the performances of the three methods. Our results show that the proposed core placement method for the CBT produces the lowest mean delay, maximum delay, and total cost among the three methods.
