Dec 11, El Avestruz Liado rated it really liked it. A very complicated book to rate or review.

The scope of Villoro's ambition is quite broad and that creates quite an issue when trying to write a review or, for that sake, a short description. Unsurprisingly, the core of the story revolves around the figure of the witness: of the present, of the past, of the core values of a nation, of social injustice, of social prejudices, etc The list is large, quite large and that is where the whole issue on reviewing this book arises.

It is hard for me to A very complicated book to rate or review. It is hard for me to tell at this moment if Villoro simply tried to bite more than he could swallow or if I just had to put closer attention as a reader to really grasp the whole thing. In that light, consider this review and rate temporal. I might reread the book at some later time and then I could change my mind. I somehow believe that this is a 5 star book.

The description of the Mexican intellectual class is also impressive and looks almost as a carbon copy of some events that would later happen compare Valdivieso's story with that of Sealtiel Alatriste. Seriously, it seems that real life imitated some of the plots shown here. In short: This book is a must read to understand contemporary Mexico during the 12 years of PAN rule. It is also a book filled with humor and penetrant observations. But beware of the depth of the scope, there are a lot of stories that come and go and it is easy to get lost.

It is a total shame that this book has not been translated yet. It is one of the most accurate and mesmerizing portraits of a nation made in the last years, not only in the mexican or spanish speaking literature.

Juan Villoro brings us the story of Julio Valdivieso, a Mexican expatriate teaching at the University of Nanterre who comes back to his native land after 24 years of absence. What does this return bring to his life? The revelation of past secrets in his life and family in the country hacienda were he spent several years of his childhood; episodes of the Cristero War in the 's; mysterious stories about the legend of the first Mexican modernist poet Ramon Lopez Velarde, and the attempt to prod Juan Villoro brings us the story of Julio Valdivieso, a Mexican expatriate teaching at the University of Nanterre who comes back to his native land after 24 years of absence.

The revelation of past secrets in his life and family in the country hacienda were he spent several years of his childhood; episodes of the Cristero War in the 's; mysterious stories about the legend of the first Mexican modernist poet Ramon Lopez Velarde, and the attempt to produce a soap opera to expose why Velarde deserves the beatification from the Vatican; the reunion of old literary workshop mates and their relatively unsuccessful careers; a Mexico whipped by drug-trafficking cartels, political transition to 'democracy', corrupt and conspiratorial authorities, and a highly distorted reality created by the media.

Filled with poetical prose, Julio Valdivieso's journey back home could have distant similarities to the sequel of the Odyssey; Mexico is an Ithaca having unknown voices that ask for a witness, an accomplice, a narrator of history Oct 11, Mark rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: mexicans. I agree with everything i said before. It seemed less dense the second time but more fun.
