This masterful work ought to be required reading for anyone wishing to legislate or govern. What is the law? What are its limits? Can the law be philanthropic without the threat of force and loss of liberty? All questions raised and answered in this concise tract. Frederic Bastiat could clearly see the dangers of the political philosophy expressed in the Communist Manifesto published just 2 years before La Loi.
He argues that the reach of the law should be strictly constrained so that the liberty of the individual be preserved. He would be dismayed by our contemporary appetite for ever more legislation. La Loi is short, polemical, repetitive, and includes considerable reference to individuals and debates of his day, of little interest to the non-specialist reader of today, but the clarity and force of his argument shines through.
A must-read for all interested in freedom. The first part comprises all of mankind, save one, and the second, and by far the more important part, is the orator himself, and he alone. Ce livre m'a parut si fondamental durant sa lecture, qu'il devrait faire l'objet d'une bien plus grande importance dans l'enseignement du droit en France par exemple.
Un livre si essentiel que tout le monde devrait l'avoir lu. One person found this helpful. This is an awesome, thought provoking read. Must read pour tout le monde!
Brilliant man, great book! Even though the French is above my ability, I had to read it in the original language. This book by Frederic Bastiat is the original French version of The Law, a short text explaining the foundations of liberty in an organized society. It was a reference for Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

It was written at Mugron two years after the third French Revolution and a few months before his death of tuberculosis at age The law becomes perverted when it is used to violate the rights of the individual, when it punishes one's right to defend himself against a collective effort of others to legislatively enact laws which basically have the same effect of plundering. Whereas justice has precise limits, philanthropy is limitless and thus government can grow endlessly when that becomes its function. The resulting statism is "based on this triple hypothesis: the total inertness of mankind, the omnipotence of the law, and the infallibility of the legislator. Bastiat argues in the work that a government consists only of the people within or authorizing it, therefore it has no legitimate powers beyond those that people would individually have:. Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society.
