Get A Copy. Una novela para reflexionar. Set at the end and shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War, this novel is divided into four stories. While victorious Franco and his subordinates did not stop the killing, they wanted to know who had been against them and continued to kill as many of the losing side as possible.

I was drawn most to the second story called The Second Defeat, which was written in the form of a letter and chronicled the life of a father and his short lived son. The Third Defeat cast a different light on 3. The Third Defeat cast a different light on parts of the first, but also chronicled the lives of two men who became friends while in prison awaiting a death sentence. Showed the desperation of men to live for something and still finding it near death one man took communion only because the host was at least some food.

The many different people who end up fighting in a war, the poets, the nurses, young boys, idealistic some, some given no choice are all represented in these gripping stories. May 06, Alberto Delgado rated it really liked it. Apr 02, Laura rated it liked it. Aunque son cuatro historias muy tristes, me parece un libro realmente bonito.

Apr 28, Marina rated it it was amazing. A literary masterpiece beautifully translated into English. An interesting account of life immediately after the Spanish Civil War which is easier for me to read from afar than a native Spanish audience. But perhaps its message can be carried forward to all conflicts and the insight into the darkness a human beings soul translated to more up to date struggles.

Here are 4 stories from the period where the fighting ceased, the victory gained but the cruelty and killing was sustained. A time not of g A literary masterpiece beautifully translated into English. A time not of glory; were mercy was shown a chapter in Spanish history some would probably chose to forget.

These narratives are set from the perspective of the defeated 'side'; they reflect various lives that were snuffed out long after the guns were silenced. They reflect a section of society where despair continued and unification into the greater Spain was not possible.

Where a desire to kill endured for the victors, to eliminate their own people because they held different views and for what they thought as much as what they believed. The theme is utter defeat. The lack of cohesion in society that allowed not scores to be settled but whole sections of the population to remain hunted to the point of total annihilation; no thought of peace, reconciliation and desire to re-build a united people.

Each story is a poignant tale of total defeat and the sense of loss. This is a beautifully written book of engaging prose and style that doesn't 'preach' a cause, but from the human perspective of these accounts, speaks to our core values and very soul.
