Apart from this particular Purana there are also many other Puranas which has the same theme of describing the various Thiruvilayadal or the Divine sports of Lord Shiva.
This has a Sanskrit version that is known as the Halasya Mahathmiyam. There will also be some minor difference between this Tamil version and the Sanskrit version of Thiruvilayadal Puranam. The stories that are described in the Thiruvilayadal Puranam by Panjothi Munivar are the one that are very ancient and also back in times when there was the existence and period of second Tamil Sangam.
There will also be some description about the ancient kings in the Thiruvilayadal puranam and the kings will also be associated with the Thiruvilayadal of Lord Shiva. Creation of Thiruvilayadal Puranam by Paranjothi Munivar Many of the scripts of our ancient Tamilnadu tell that the Thiruvilayadal of lord Shiva is well known and a very common thing.
The great saints have told that there are totally 64 stories of Lord Shiva's Thiruvilayadal which is very famous and has its greatness in it. Thirunavukkarasar and Thirugnyanasambandhar had already mentioned most of the Thiruvilayadal in their songs. The Thiruvilayadal that was told by the Thirunavukkarasar and Thirugnyanasambandhar was the oldest one and but still it does not have any evidences. It is said that the scripts and the Puranas and Ithihasas that existed about the Thiruvilayadal of Lord Shiva had vanished or destroyed or hidden due to many reasons.
There are no evidences and the scripts in our hand to show the exact Thiruvilayadal Purana. The creation of the latest Thiruvilayadal Purana was done by the great Paranjothi Munivar in the 17th — 18th century AD. It is still not clear on which particular century Paranjothi Munivar lived and had written the Thiruvilayadal Puranam. There are also many other scripts available that are similar to the Thiruvilayadal Puranam by Paranjothi Munivar in the other language but there are also some difference in certain concepts and stories between the two.
But now we are exactly following the one that is written by the Paranjothi Munivar. Greatness of Thiruvilayadal Puranam The Thiruvilayadal Purana not only describes about the greatness of the Lord Shiva but also it describes about the greatness of Pandya Nadu which is the oldest place in the history.
It is said that the Pandya Nadu is the most holy place in India which has the greatness of Lord Shiva. There are totally 64 different Divine sports of Lord Shiva which will be described in the great manner. This Thiruvilayadal of Lord Shiva will be more helpful in understanding the value of the human life and the devotion to the lord Shiva. If we read it in the wise manner we can also know more about the power of lord Shiva and the greatness of Lord Shiva. The Thiruvilayadal Purana first explains about the greatness of the Pandya Nadu and all the things that are happening in the Pandya Nadu.
There are also many kings involved in the Thiruvilayadal Purana in which the story of the Kings are also coming as the part of it and the stories are in such a way that it describes the greatness of the kings. The poetry is also very good in such a way that the situation and the greatness of the person involved in the Purana will be more pleasing and also provokes rapid interest for the readers.
